Costa Rica is a politically secular country with weak links between church and state. Though the constitution provides for religious freedom, Roman Catholicism is the official religion, practiced by almost 77% of the population. As such, only Catholic marriages receive state recognition—all others must have a civil ceremony. Semana Santa (Holy Week), a national holiday culminating on Easter Sunday, is a balance of piety and partying. Protestantism has a presence, though it has yet to gain the ubiquity it has in other Central American countries. There are small numbers of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jews, Mennonites, Quakers, and people of other denominations throughout the country.
