The Middle Atlas is Morocco’s heartland, an arid stretch where empires grew and political dynasties rose and fell. Home to Fez and Meknes, the region sees ancient medinas traversed by donkeys and modern cities growing side-by-side. Modernization has created dramatic contrasts, from the ancient Roman ruins of Volubulis outside Meknes to the satellite dishes on Fez’s medina homes.
