The High Atlas is among the most striking and varied landscapes in the world, embracing snow-capped mountains, unearthly pink rock fortresses, and gargantuan waterfalls alike. So diverse is this region that movies set in locales as disparate as Tibet and Arabia have been filmed here. At the feet of the High Atlas lies Marrakesh, a city overflowing with unique architecture, exotic bazaars, and magical energy. Falling southeast from the Atlas ranges and stretching through Ouarzazate to the sand-dune seas of the Sahara is Morocco’s own desert. Mountainous and desolate, its deep reds and oranges are softened only by the rare, green veins of oases that creep through the valley floors. Set into this landscape are fantastic Berber towns and kasbahs, where pizid (mud and straw) castles tower over the road. Excursions are possible by local transportation, but a rental car is best for exploring this region.
