San Pedro pulses with life at night: the dances are salsa and merengue, the drinks are cervezas or guaro cocktails, and the scenes range from karaoke bars full of ticos belting out Latin tunes to American sports bars packed with tourists playing pool and swapping gringo wit. Calle de la Amargura is always hopping and has the best atmosphere for meeting young ticos, San José center offers the best dancing, and El Pueblo is a convenient complex that houses many clubs and bars in one place. Most bars and clubs charge ¢1000-1500, sometimes more for men, though covers are somewhat negotiable and typically include drinks. Dress is casual; A t-shirt is fine in San Pedro bars, but you might want to throw on some dressier threads to go to the El Pueblo or the San José clubs. It’s a good idea to bring your ISIC card or passport to most clubs and bars because the bouncers will require a valid ID to let you in (18+).
