Tourism enters overdrive in June, July, and August. Hotels are booked solid, rates skyrocket, and rows of lounge chairs take over pristine beaches. Around Ferragosto, a national holiday on August 15, Italians head to the coast, leaving a flood of closed businesses in their wake. Some larger cities avoid this summer hibernation and remain enjoyable in August, but late May through July make for a livelier trip. Traveling to Italy in early May or early September assures a calmer, cooler, cheaper vacation, with temperatures averaging a comfortable 25˚C (77˚F). Depending on the destination, a trip in April offers the advantages of lower prices and smaller crowds. The best weather for hiking in the Alps is from June to September; ski season generally lasts from December through late March, although some locations stay open year-round.
