Sandwiched between the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas, the Italian coastline stretches over 2000 mi. In the northwest, the famous beaches of Liguria form the Italian Riviera, home to the picturesque fishing villages of Cinque Terre and the glitterati-packed resorts of San Remo . Farther down, the hidden gem, Ponza , provides a relaxing daytrip from sweaty Rome. Swing south along the Amalfi Coast to beach towns like Positano and Capri that offer sparkling waters, lapping against cliffs and lemon groves. After getting your dose of high culture in Venice’s art museums, don’t miss the nearby beach towns like Caorle , Lignano , and Grado . On the Salento Peninsula, Otranto and Gallipoli’s emerald waters entice visitors. In Abruzzo and Molise, the Tremiti Islands are home to rocky coves and secluded beaches, excellent for swimming and snorkeling. Also on the east coast, Rimini attracts a large student population with its beaches during the day as well as a smoking night club scene. Calabria and Sicily offer visitors variety, from the dark stone coasts of African-influenced Pantelleria to the resort towns of Cefalù .
