Central Maui Overview

Central Maui refers to the valley that stretches between the West Maui Mountains and the Haleakala Volcano. The valley receives a fair amount of rain, and the clouds and strong winds make it cooler than the west side. The 40-acre Kanaha Pond, a major bird sanctuary near the airport, is the only natural body of water on Maui. However, aside from the county seat of Wailuku and the commercial center of Kahului, there isn’t much here except vast fields of sugarcane. Kaahumanu Ave. and Rte. 32 (Main St.) run along the northern part of the area, all the way to the spectacular Iao Valley . Rte. 36 and 37 connect Central Maui with the North Shore and upcountry towns in the east , Rte. 350/311 (Puunene Ave./Mokulele Hwy.) leads South Maui , and Rte. 30 (Honoapiilani Hwy.) goes to Lahaina .
