OTHER Maui DESTINATIONS

Upcountry Maui Overview

Upcountry Maui loosely encompasses the rural townships built on the slopes of the ancient Haleakala Volcano. Although the region is only minutes from the busy commercial center of Kahului, you’ll feel a world away in Upcountry’s quaint villages, rolling landscapes, and cool temperatures. In the heart of Upcountry’s pastoral hills, Kula grows much of the island’s produce, from sweet corn and greens to tomatoes, avocados, and papayas. Kula is home to magnificent floral gardens, many of which include the unique protea flower. South of Kula along Rte. 37 (Kula Hwy.), the tiny hamlet of Keokea has a coffee shop, art gallery, general store, gas station, and thousands of acres of ranch land. Paniolo cowboys ride and hog-tie every year at the Fourth of July rodeo in Makawao, the only town in Upcountry with a proper main street. This old cowboy town is also home to a string of charming shops and galleries. North of Makawao, serene Haiku connects Upcountry to the North Shore.
