Geographically, Italy lies in a temperate zone and has a predominantly Mediterranean climate. Yet, due to the peninsula’s length, temperatures and weather often vary drastically in different parts of the country, based on proximity to the coast or the mountains. Summers in the south near the coast are dry and hot, as the sea and beaches are baked by the warm sicorro wind blowing in from North Africa. Moving north and inland, summer temperatures remain hot, but in the absence of a sea breeze, excessive humidity gets added to the mix. Things cool down countrywide in the winter, but to varying degrees, ranging from mild temperatures in the south to freezing fog, frost, and snow in the northern valleys. As a general rule, average temperatures are lower at higher altitudes year-round, especially in the Italian Alps, and wet weather hits most areas of the country from April to June.
