On the Big Island, a few miles can make a world of difference. Kealakekua, Captain Cook, and Honaunau blithely maintain their sleepy coffee-town existence, unaware of the hustle and bustle in nearby Kailua-Kona. Lining the Mamalahoa Hwy. (Rte. 11), this series of towns has a funky vibe all its own, along one of the most culturally and ecologically rich stretches of coastline on the island. Puuhonua o Honaunau preserves artifacts of Hawaiian history, while Kealakekua Bay’s water provides fantastic snorkeling. The towns keep to an organic farming lifestyle and a few turnoffs along the highway lead to untouched beaches.
