The waterfront streets of Naples afford city-dwellers a great opportunity for relaxation. A 4km rocky shoreline stretches from V. Nazaro Sauro in the P. del Plebiscito area through V. Caracciolo in Mergellina. Ignoring the nearby ports, Neapolitans claim these rocks as their escape from the city, bathing in the sun and casually dipping into the bay or swimming around the Castel dell’Ovo. Kiosks at Piazza Nazaro Sauro sell refreshing drinks and even lemon-sprayed, salted tripe late into the night. Downstairs in the piazza, easygoing locals let rowboats. (☎081 33 19 86 98 09. Open daily 7am-9pm. €20 for 2hr., but counter-offers are highly recommended.) Currents are generally mild, and swimming in the open water is both refreshing and cleaner than near the shore. Find shade and enjoy a picnic at the Villa Communale, a large public park which stretches along V. Caracciolo opposite to the waterfront. (Open daily 7am-midnight. Free.) Waterfront bars abound along V. Partenope. If you’re famished after a swim, Bar dell’Ovo, V. Partenope 6, outdoes its surrounding competitors with an aperitivo hour (7pm), a discoteca (Nov.-May Th-Su midnight-5am), an electrifying bar crew, and outdoor seating characteristic of the lungomare. (☎081 24 74 653. Beer €3. Wine €4. Mixed drinks €4.50. Open 8am-3am. Cash only.)
