New York is the most populous city in the US, the most densely populated city in North America, and an undisputed world capital. It packs 8.2 million people into its 321 sq. mi., and some 21 million residents cluster in its greater metropolitan area. Many tourists tend to think of New York City consisting of the island of Manhattan alone, and until 1898, they were correct: New York City was contained within Manhattan, and Brooklyn, across the Hudson River, was the country’s second-most populated metropolis. Today, the five boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island comprise the city, and each is a county of state government. The city’s mayor, currently the Hon. Michael Bloomberg, governs with the assistance of a 51-member city council, with each council member representing approximately 157,000 residents.
