Traveling for long periods of time can become expensive. Many travelers try their hand at odd jobs for a few weeks at a time to help pay for another month or two of touring around. One of the easiest ways to earn money is as a temp worker. Offices often hire employees for short periods (anywhere from a few days to several months) through New York's many temp agencies. Most jobs are secretarial in nature: data entry, filing, answering phones, etc. The Red Guide to Temp Agencies ( www.panix.com/~grvsmth/redguide) provides great reviews of the city's temp agencies. Another popular option is to work for several hours a day at a hostel in exchange for free or discounted room and/or board.
Most often, these short-term jobs are found by word of mouth or by expressing interest to the owner of a hostel or restaurant. Due to high turnover in the tourism industry, many places are eager for help, even if it is only temporary. Let's Go lists temporary jobs of this nature whenever possible; look in the Essentials chapter of this book or see below.
