Be aware, however, that it is an inconvenient distance away from other areas of the city—especially when compared to other Jazz hostels. - HARLEM YMCA—CLAUDE MCCKAY RESIDENCE, 180 West 135th St. Privacy is not on offer here—though all bathrooms are shared, only singles and doubles with bunks are available. The rooms are smallish and spare, some featuring minimal accessories like small desks. The perks are spiffy nonetheless, including use of the YMCA's gym, swimming pool, and lounge. And the building itself is an official city landmark; it dates from the early 1930s and is named after a famous author of the Harlem Renaissance. Prices vary by season.
