New York City:

OTHER USA DESTINATIONS

New York City Brooklyn Heights

  • Siggy's Good Food, 76 Henry St. (www.siggysgoodfood.com), Siggy's proudly organic ingredients will appeal to that granola crunch inside you. Face it: you probably need to eat healthier, anyway. Even the wine and beer is organic, and the salad menu impresses with quinoa, avocado, and tofu galore. But meat isn't totally out; Siggy's generous sandwich and burger menu includes organic steak along with the likes of “Cheese Lover Heaven.” Entrees $9-17. Open Tu-F 11:30am-10pm, Sa-Su 10am-10pm. Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access. Serves alcohol. Has outdoor seating.
  • Tutt Cafe, 47 Hicks St. (at Middagh St.) (www.tuttcafe.com), Though Atlantic Ave. along the Heights' southern edge has been totally colonized by Middle Eastern eateries, Tutt comes as a surprise amidst the quiet residential streets to the north. It's a treat: all the favorites like falafel and merguez sandwiches and plates, along with lambajin pizza and baklava for dessert. There's also an impressive salad menu, featuring tabbouleh and hummus. Sandwiches $4-8. Salads $4-6. Plates $6-11. Pizza $7-9. Open daily 11am-11:30pm. Does not take credit cards. No wheelchair access. Has outdoor seating.
  • Waterfalls Cafe, 144 Atlantic Ave. (at Clinton St.) The western edge of Atlantic Ave. is a gold mine for lovers of Middle Eastern cuisine: Yemeni restaurants rub shoulders with Lebanese and Egyptian choices. Waterfalls is one of the less prepossessing ones, a simple eatery with a large menu covering all your Mid East needs. The salad and maza selection is especially impressive with items like baba ghanoush, stuffed grape leaves, and mohamara (walnuts, red pepper, garlic, and spices). Salads and sandwiches $4-10. Platters and specials $7-15. Pizza $7-9.50. Open daily 11am-11pm. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access.
  • Sahadi Importing Company, 187 Atlantic Ave. (www.sahadis.com), This grocery teems with imported Mediterranean items, from instant falafel to no-nonsense rice pilaf. There's also a room filled with fresh salad items, sweets, and dried fruits and vegetables. Crowds of locals can make navigation difficult. Open M-Sa 9am-7pm. Does not take credit cards. Wheelchair access. Has air conditioning.
  • Heights Cafe, 84 Montage St. (at Hicks St.) (www.heightscafeny.com), This sleek and somewhat upscale option along busy Montague St. attracts an older clientele. But the outdoor seating (great people-watching opportunity) and plentiful sandwiches, wraps, pizzas, and salads on the menu may be enough to gentrify you. Sandwiches, wraps, and salads $9-14. Entrees $17-24. Open daily noon-11pm. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access. Has outdoor seating.
