New York City:

OTHER USA DESTINATIONS

New York City Park Slope And Prospect Park

  • Cafe Steinhof, 422 7th Ave. (at 14th St.) (www.cafesteinhof.com), Yes, yet another Austrian restaurant/music venue/makeshift film theater in Park Slope. But Steinhof attains its Alpine peak above the crowd with an appropriately delicious menu (beef gulasch and sauerbraten and jaegerschnitzel, oh my) and crazy modernist interior decorating—complete with Expressionist-style paintings on the wall and an indescribable ceiling scheme. It's a refreshing bit of irreverence amid the family-friendly neighborhood fun. Sandwiches $6-9. Lunch entrees $6-11. Dinner entrees $10-14. Desserts $5. Open M 5-11pm, Tu-Su 11am-4pm and 5-11pm. W concerts begin 10:30pm, Su film screening times vary (check website for details). Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access. Serves alcohol. Has air conditioning.
  • Ozzie's Cafe and Tea, 249 5th Ave. or 57 7th Ave. (www.ozziescoffee.com), Other cafes of Ozzie's ilk wish they had the space and comfort on offer at its two locations. With a cosmopolitan selection of roasts hailing from Ecuador to Ethiopia to Mexico to France to the United States, there's always something for the next visit—and the complimentary Wi-Fi for those laying down $5 or more pretty much mandates an extended stay. For 249 5th Ave. location: Coffee and tea $1.75-3.75. Sandwiches $6.50. Pastries $2-5. Open daily 7am-10pm. Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access. Has internet.
  • Stone Park Cafe, 324 5th Ave. (at 3rd St.) (www.stoneparkcafe.com), The American standards at this brightly lit, parkside restaurant—hangtown fry for breakfast, colorado lamb loin for lunch or dinner, cappuccino cheesecake for dessert—have made it a Park Slope favorite. This cafe is a perfect distillation of the neighborhood itself: clean, green, pleasant, satisfying, and a bit expensive. Hang out at the corner cafe if the entrees are too much of a budget stretch. Entrees $10-25. Open Tu-F 11:30am-2:30pm and 5:30-10pm, Sa 11:30am-2:30pm and 5:30pm-midnight, Su 11:30am-2:30pm and 5:30-9pm. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access. Serves alcohol.
  • Convivium Osteria, 68 5th Ave. (at St. Mark's Pl.) (www.convivium-osteria.com), This quaint spot banks heavily on your desire for all things pastoral, southern European, and seaside. The decor is rustic with lots of stone walls and arched doorways, and a green outdoor space in back—and the food is drawn mostly from Italy, Spain, and Portugal, satisfyingly varied, from braised rabbit to Spanish tapas. All this refinement basically insists that you recite some memorized poetry to your date. Or something. Appetizers $6-27. Entrees $15-28. Open M-Th 6-11pm, F-Sa 5:30-11:30pm, Su 5-10pm. Does not take credit cards. No wheelchair access. Serves alcohol. Has outdoor seating.
  • Chip Shop, 383 5th Ave. (at 6th St.) (www.chipshopnyc.com), The Chip Shop throws itself into the world of earthy British pub grub with admirable to-hell-with-it pride. British memorabilia, from Bowie posters to Tube signs to the ubiquitous Union Jack, stare down from yellow walls at the small but communal dining area. Fish and chips, of course, dominate. The dozen-plus varieties on offer should teach you a lesson in the ethics of cuisine stereotyping. There's a takeout stand around the corner on 6th St. Entrees $6.50-12. Open M-Th and Su 10am-9pm, F-Sa 10am-11pm. Does not take credit cards. No wheelchair access. Serves alcohol.
  • Lobo, 188 5th Ave. (at Sackett St.) (www.lobonyc.com), If Park Slope is feeling a bit too..twee, Lobo's Texas swagger will set you right. We can start with the cowhide on the booths and continue onto the meaty offerings, like chicken fried steak (making all the single-genre meats look bad) and drunken chicken (pollo baracho). Enchiladas, tacos, chalupas, and fajitas round up this delicious mix. Breakfast $6.50-10. Entrees $10-21. Open M-W and Su 11am-10pm, Th 11am-midnight, F-Sa 11am-1am. Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access. Serves alcohol.
