Although less well-known than Harlem, “Bed-Stuy” is New York City’s oldest and largest African-American community. Spike Lee, Jay-Z, and Chris Rock are all Bed-Stuy natives. It’s not a heavily touristed part of town, in part because it’s not always safe after dark, and in part because it’s mainly residential. If you walk its streets during the day, however, you will be treated to some of the city’s finest brownstones, especially on Macon, MacDonough, Decatur, Bainbridge, and Chauncey St. (Bounded by Bedford Ave. to the west, Atlantic Ave. to the south, Broadway to the east, and Flushing Ave. to the north. S G to Bedford/Nostrand Ave.; C, S to Franklin Ave.; A, C to Nostrand Ave.; C to Kingston/Throop Ave.)
