OTHER USA DESTINATIONS

New York City New York City Sunset Park And Green-Wood Cemetery Brooklyn Sights

  • Green-Wood Cemetery, Main entrance at 5th Ave. and 25th St. (www.green-wood.com), This enormous, 478 acre cemetery just southwest of Prospect Park is a quiet green space that rivals its massive neighbor for sheer isolation from the urban environment nearby. Immaculately designed (it was modeled after the landmark Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA) and spacious enough to warrant a few visits, Green-Wood was established in 1838 and still celebrates a pastoral American romanticism in its lush landscapes and peaceful paths. In the second half of the 1800s it was the burial place of choice for New York's upper crust and even became one of the country's top tourist attractions. Famous residents among the 600,000 internees include Leonard Bernstein, FAO Schwartz, Boss Tweed, and Charles Ebbets (owner of the G Brooklyn Dodgers). Free. Labor Day to Memorial Day weekend open daily 8am-5pm; Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day open daily 7am-7pm. Takes credit cards. Has outdoor seating.
