New York City:

OTHER USA DESTINATIONS

New York City Elmhurst And Corona

  • Louis Armstrong's House, 34-56 107th St. (www.satchmo.net), From 1943 to 1971, jazz hero Louis Armstrong could have lived anywhere in the world, but he chose to spend the last 28 years of his life in Corona, Queens with his fourth wife, Lucille. Whether it's because of the luxurious bathroom where Armstrong posed for a 1971 Time Magazine article, the study where he indexed all his music, or the kitchen where he cooked his favorite dish, red beans and rice, is unclear, but visitors inevitably come out of the 40min. tour feeling like they have a new friend. Recordings of Armstrong's scratchy voice that fill the rooms on the tour make him seem omnipresent. They also convey his affinity for Brussels sprouts and surprising appreciation of the Beatles (“If they'd only get a haircut..”). $8; students, seniors, and ages under 12 $6; under 4 free. Tours every hr. Tu-F 10am-4pm, Sa noon-4pm. Garden and visitors' center open until 5pm. Takes credit cards.
