Huge, bucolic Woodlawn Cemetery contains the grave sites of many prominent Americans; composer Oscar Hammerstein, New York mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, and novelist Herman Melville. Music lovers visit the resting places of jazz legends Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and Lionel Hampton. To the north, Woodlawn is a neighborhood filled with Irish immigrants. The park is filled with winding asphalt paths that curl around the ornate gravemarkers alongside a few rare weeping beech trees. (East of Van Cortlandt Park. S 4 to Woodlawn. Main entrance at Webster Ave. and E 233rd St. ☎718-920-0500; www.thewoodlawncemetery.org. Open daily 8:30am-5pm; check website for holiday hours.)
