The self-proclaimed “seaport of the Bronx,” this salty maritime village was once a ship- and submarine-building hub. Nautical ventures today are more recreational than commercial. Plenty of diving shops, tackle stores, and seafood shacks line City Island Ave., the neighborhood’s major thoroughfare. Proud residents sometimes refer to themselves as “clam diggers”; outsiders are mere “mussel suckers.” Rent a fishing boat, take a sunset cruise, or dine at one of the many waterfront restaurants for a distinct change of pace from downtown New York City. ( S 6 to Pelham Bay Park; board bus Bx29 outside the station. Bus drops off at various points along City Island Ave., the main drag. www.cityisland.com.)
