Basketball is one of New York’s favorite pastimes. Courts can be found in parks and playgrounds all over the city, and are frequently occupied. Pickup basketball games can be found throughout the city, each with its own rituals, rules, and degree of intensity. The Cage, at W Fourth and Sixth Ave., is home to some of the city’s best amateur players: rumor has it that scouts for college and pro teams occasionally drop by incognito to ferret out new talent. Other pickup spots worth checking out include Central Park, 96th and Lexington Ave., Tompkins Sq. Park, and 76th and Columbus Ave.
