New York City Carroll Gardens And Red Hook

The emerging Carroll Gardens nightlife scene, centered on Smith Street, is relaxed, unpretentious, and a refreshing breather from Brooklynite hipdom.

  • Gowanus Yacht Club, 323 Smith St. (☎718-246-1321), at President St. S F, G to Carroll St. Friendly outdoor patio with the feel of a rowdy neighborhood barbecue. 10 kinds of hot dogs (including a vegan “Not Dog”), juicy cheeseburgers, and nothing more than $5. Open May-Oct M-Th 4pm-midnight, F 4pm-2am, Sa 2pm-2am, Su 2pm-midnight.
  • Moonshine, 317 Columbia St. (☎718-852-8057; www.brooklynmoonshine.com), between Woodhull and Hamilton St. S F, G to Carroll St. You’ve heard of restaurants that are BYOB. This bar is BYOM—Bring Your Own Meat. During the summer, they’ll grill for you and furnish all the condiments. You’ll also find a selection of board and arcade games, an upright piano, 49 different types of whiskey and plenty of free peanuts, the shells of which litter the floor. Beer $2-4. Open daily 4pm-2am, later on busy nights.
