  • Bookstores:
    • Bestsellers, 1001 Bishop St., #138 (☎808-528-2378, fax 808-528-2389), on the corner of Hotel St. Open M-F 7:30am-5:30pm, Sa 9am-3pm. AmEx/MC/V.
  • Libraries:
    • Hawaii State Library, 478 S. King St. (☎808-586-3500; www.librarieshawaii.org), east of Iolani Palace, in the Civic Center—look for the huge white pillars. Added to the State and National Register of Historical Places in 1975, the Hawaii State Library anchors the only state-wide library system in the United States, with a collection of over 3 million books and other materials. Temporary library passes can be purchased there or at any state public library for use at all branches. 3-month visitor’s card $10, 5-year nonresident pass $25. Open Tu and F-Sa 9am-5pm, M and W 10am-5pm, Th 9am-8pm.
    • McCully-Moiliili Public Library, 2211 S. King St. (☎808-973-1099). Open Tu-W and F-Sa 10am-5pm, Th noon-7pm.
    • Manoa Library, 2716 Woodlawn Dr. (☎808-988-0459). Open Tu 1-8pm; M and W-Sa 10am-5pm.
  • Outdoor Services:
    • Department of Parks and Recreation, 1000 Uluohia St., Ste. 309 (☎808-768-3440), in Kapolei, Oahu. Camping permits available at the Main Permits Office, 650 S. King St. (☎808-768-3440). Both offices open M-F 7:45am-4pm.
    • Hawaii Nature Center, 2131 Makiki Heights Dr. (☎808-955-0100; www.hawaiinaturecenter.org), in Makiki Valley. Hands-on programs, community events, and guided hikes. Schedule available online. Open daily 8am-4:30pm.
    • Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club (☎808-674-1459; www.htmclub.org) hikes a different trail every weekend; visitors are welcome. Quarterly hike schedules available online. All hikes meet at Iolani Palace at 8am on each Su and the second Sa of every month. Under 18 must be accompanied by adult. $2 suggested donation for nonmembers.
    • Sierra Club, 1040 Richards St. rm. 306 in the YWCA (☎808-538-6616). Hikes, outings, and service projects. Visitors and nonmembers welcome. Schedule available online. Unless otherwise noted, hikes leave at 8am from 2510 Bingham St., in Moiliili. Under 18 must be accompanied by adult. $5, Sierra Club members and under 14 $1.
