As a rule, the closer you are to Waikiki, the more populated the sand will be. Ala Moana presents a peaceful, nearby option for avoiding the crowds.
Ala Moana Beach Park. (Open daily 4am-10pm. Lifeguards 9am-5:30pm.) Ala Moana means “path to the sea,” and the palm tree-dotted park leads the way. A popular jogging circuit runs around Mamala Bay, which is perfect for an easy swim. The circuit then veers onto Magic Island (Aina Moana), a peninsula that juts out on the east side of the bay, separating the beach from the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor. Magic Island may be the best spot in the city to watch the sun dissolve into the sea and sky, casting translucent beams of light through the looming clouds that frequently roll over the mountains. The beach is in front of Ala Moana Shopping Center, on Ala Moana Park Dr. Access driveways are at the western end of the park, just past Kamakee St. Alternatively, take TheBus #8, 19, 20, 42, or 58 to the Ala Moana Shopping Center. Public tennis courts are first-come first-served, with play limited to 45 minutes. Restrooms and outdoor showers are available. Alcohol, animals, ball-playing, frisbee, and camping are prohibited.
