The Big Island has two major airports. Keahole-Kona International Airport, Keahole Airport Rd. (☎808-329-3423), 8 mi. north of downtown Kailua-Kona off Rte. 19, is closest to South Kohala’s crescent of resorts and sees the majority of international traffic. It is also served by interisland carriers. Flights from the Big Island to neighboring islands start at around $90 each way. Hawaiian Airlines (☎800-367-5320; www.hawaiianair.com) flies from Kona to: Honolulu, Oahu; Kahului, Maui; and Lihue, Kauai (via Honolulu). go! airlines (☎888-435-9462; www.iflygo.com) offers some of the cheapest rates between Kona and: Honolulu, Oahu; Kahului, Maui; Hoolehua, Molokai; Lihue, Kauai (via Honolulu); and Lanai City, Lanai (via Kahului). Surfers beware: both Hawaiian and go! charge a fee for surfboards (and go! only takes surfboards under 6 ft.).
A half mile south of the intersection of Rte. 11 and Rte. 19, Hilo International Airport, Airport Access Rd. (☎808-934-5840), sees mostly interisland flights, but it is also served by United Airlines (☎800-241-6522). Both go! and Hawaiian fly from Hilo to Honolulu, Oahu, and connect to the neighboring islands through Honolulu. An $8-10 taxi is the only transportation from the airport to Hilo.
