Snorkeling. Although the island’s best snorkeling is south of Kona in Captain Cook , a number of companies sail snorkel cruises from the bay. Be sure to bring extra water, sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen. For a do-it-yourself snorkel experience, head to Snorkel Bob’s or Walmart.
Scuba Diving. Even those who aren’t certified can have an underwater adventure on an introductory dive for around $125. Open-water certification courses run between 3-4 days ($425). Almost every rental place, including Kona Beach Boys (see below), books scuba dives as well. An appealing excursion for experienced divers is Manta Ray’s Night Dive. Lights attract plankton, which in turn attract manta rays to the dive site; as you sit underwater, the mammoth manta rays will zoom around you in an underwater acrobatic act. Those hesitant to dive deep can try “snuba,” a shallower version of scuba diving, also available through Kona Beach Boys.
Bodyboarding. Bodyboard and surfboard rentals are not the easiest finds in town, although certain shops on Alii Dr. carry them. Try Kahaluu Surf Rentals at Kahaluu beach. Again, buying a bodyboard at Walmart ($40) may be most cost-effective for multiple days of boarding.
Canoeing. Come down to Kamakahonu Beach where the T Kona Boys (☎808-326-7686; www.konaboys.com) are just hangin’ loose in their humble hut. More than just a paddle around the bay, their outrigger trips are adventures into Hawaii’s past. Guides explain the significance of the area, focusing on Ahuena Heiau and the past importance of the outrigger canoe as a mode of transport. (79-7539 Mamalahoa Hwy. Also on the shore at Kamakahonu. Canoe trips $38. 2hr. surf lesson includes rental, $119. Fins and goggles, $10. Open daily 8am- 5pm.)
Dolphin Diving. For the curious traveler looking for a break from the busy Kona tourist industry, the dolphin tours at Dolphin Journeys are unforgettable. Dolphin Journeys offers whale-watching and volcano tours. (☎808-329-3030; www.dolphinjourneys.com. Meals included. Half-day tours $100-175.) Remember, too, that dolphins often swim just offshore of some the beaches listed above.
