Once on the island, renting a car is a necessity, as there is no public transportation. A single highway stretches 50 mi. from one side of the island to the other, making Molokai Hawaii’s easiest island to navigate.
Budget has an office in the Molokai Airport (☎808-567-6877 or 800-527-0700; www.budget.com. Open 6:30am-7pm) as does Dollar (☎808-567-6156; www.dollar.com. Open 6am-7pm). Check for Internet specials. Island Kine Auto Rental, 242 Ilio Rd. (☎808-553-5242 or 866-527-7368; www.molokai-car-rental.com), is just north of Ala Malama Ave. This local outfit rents cars, trucks, vans, and ATVs from its lot south of town on Ala Malama Ave. It will pick you up from the airport and orient you to the island. ($45-70 per day. Open daily 7am-7pm.) Try Molokai Outdoors (☎808-553-4477; www.molokai-outdoors.com) for bargain car rentals negotiated directly with Dollar, as well as a cheap shuttle service from the airport ($14 per person one-way to Kaunakakai). Taxis are expensive, but are available from early morning to 8pm from Molokai Off-Road Tours & Taxi (☎808-553-3369), which operates all over the island (airport to Kaunakakai $26.80). Hele Mai Taxis (☎808-336-0967), also operates island-wide, (airport to Kaunakakai $27, airport to Maunaloa $32). No rental cars are technically permitted off paved roads. Even in a 4WD vehicle, never drive off-road in the rain; getting stuck on Molokai is a major inconvenience. Gas prices on Molokai are often substantially higher than on Oahu or Maui. Always drive with your fuel level in mind, as there are only three gas stations on the island—none east of Kaunakakai or near the airport. If you need assistance, call a full-service station in Kaunakakai. Shirley Rawlins’ Chevron, 20 Maunaloa Hwy. (☎808-553-3214), is a good bet. (Open M-Th 6:30am-8:30pm, F-Sa 6:30am-9pm, Su 7am-6pm.)
