From the stately granite buildings of its Old Town to the leafy avenues of its upscale West End to the crowded shopping streets of the city center, Aberdeen combines a dignified, old-fashioned elegance with an energetic vibe fueled by its active student and young professional populations. Recent years have witnessed a boom due to nearby North Sea oil fields, and several large-scale development projects are in progress to move the city away from and beyond its industrial and shipping roots.
