Northeast Aegean Islands Overview

With limited transportation to even their Dodecanese neighbors, the Northeast Aegean islands go about life at their own pace with their own rules. Sappho, Pythagoras, and Homer hail from these free-thinking islands, which more recently welcomed 15,000 Communist exiles during the Civil War following WWII. Closer to Istanbul than Athens, the Northeast Aegean islands are largely overlooked by major travel companies. This helps the islands retain their original quirks, from chewing gum monopolies to miniature prehistoric cities to lesbian theater festivals. For the more traditional travelers, vast wilderness, local hospitality, and undisturbed beaches reward those who brave the ferry schedules to get here.
