The only inhabited island within Greece’s National Marine Park, Alonnisos is a pleasant starting point for those exploring the marine sanctuary and it is refreshing respite after Skiathos. Carpeted with well-marked trails that stretch through the forested hills to the coastal cliffs, it’s a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. To the northeast, the small island of Gioura claims to have been the home of Polyphemus, the Cyclops whose eye was gouged out by Odysseus’s sizzling lance. Though many islands claim this distinction, Gioura’s rocky landscape best fits Homer’s description of Polyphemus’s cavern, complete with herds of the now-endangered brown goats with black crosses on their backs.
