We rented a car in Heraklion after getting off the ferry from Santorini. The eastern side of Crete is much less populated than the western side. The beautiful beach at Katos Zakros was perfectly uncrowded and the water was warm. There is also a famous Minoan ruin there that is basically across the street from the beach area.
