Queensland Accommodations

Cairns may not be a big city, but its reputation as the gateway to far north Queensland’s ecological wonders has established it as a favorite for backpackers. While many hostels are clustered along the Esplanade, there are plenty of others in the CBD and along the Captain Cook Highway (Highway 1). Hostels in these areas are generally large and are the best bet for last-minute bookings.

  • Cockroach Motel. Some hostels are extremely cheap—but also extremely dirty. It’s a good idea to check out rooms before booking them (if you’re taking a taxi, ask the driver to wait). Make sure you’ll be able to handle the grime before committing; this is especially important in the extremely humid tropical north, where mold can be a problem.
