Tjapukai. The Indigenous cultural park of Tjapukai sits 15min. north of Cairns, off the Cook Hwy. in Smithfield. Pronounced “JAB-a-guy,” this is one of the most rewarding and balanced presentations of Aboriginal myths, customs, and history in Queensland. Learn how to throw a boomerang or spear, see a cultural dance show, watch a film on Indigenous history, and more. Set aside at least half a day for the experience. Crystal Cascades. Only 30km from Cairns’s center, this freshwater swimming hole provides a refreshing break on hot, lazy days. The best part? It’s completely free. Be careful on the slippery rocks in and around the cascades. There’s also a short, breathtaking hiking trail through the surrounding area. (Drive north along Sheridan St., turn left on Aeroglen, head toward Redlynch, and follow the signs. Wheelchair-accessible. Restrooms available.)
