KI is Australia’s third-largest island (after Tasmania and Melville Island, Northern Territory). The ferry lands in Penneshaw (pop. 250), on the north coast of Dudley Peninsula. North Terrace in Penneshaw has a petrol station, pub, and a few small restaurants. Hog Bay Road heads southwest out of town to the narrow strip of land connecting the peninsula to the mainland before curving northwest toward American River and Kingscote. Kingscote (pop. 1800), KI’s largest town, is about a 45min. drive from the ferry port. There, Chapman St. runs along the water, while most of the shops and services are on Dauncey St., a parallel road one block away. Playford Highway heads west from Kingscote through the middle of the island, passing Parndana before ending at Cape Borda on the island’s northwestern tip. South Coast Road diverges from the Playford Hwy. 15km west of Kingscote and swings through most of the attractions on the south coast, leading to the main entrance of Flinders Chase National Park, which spans most of KI’s west end. The West End Highway runs north-south through Flinders Chase and connects South Coast Rd. to the Playford Hwy. All the main roads are sealed, but access roads to many sights along the way are unsealed. The very scenic but unsealed North Coast Road is accessible via the Playford Hwy. and leads to the north coast’s tranquil beaches.
