There is no taxi service on the island, but a lot of visitors still take to the roads. Most of the tourist thoroughfares are paved, and unsealed roads leading to major sights are generally in good condition. However, most rental companies do not insure vehicles on unsealed roads, so check ahead before bringing a car over on the ferry. A 4WD provides maximum flexibility. Rental companies on the island offer free shuttles to the airport in Kingscote and a ferry pickup option. Be sure to plan carefully when renting on the island, as most companies have limited kilometers and the island is larger than most visitors anticipate.

Public Transportation: Limited SeaLink coach service runs from the Penneshaw ferry terminal to Kingscote (1hr.; $14, children $7) via American River (30min., $11/5.50).
Car Rental: Budget, 51A Dauncey St. (☎08 8553 3133), in Kingscote. Arranges pickup anywhere on the island except American River. Ages 21 and up. Hertz KI (☎08 8553 2390 or 1800 088 296), on the corner of Franklin St. and Telegraph Rd. in Kingscote. Car pickup from the ferry by arrangement.

Make Way For The ’Roos. Wildlife is plentiful in KI, and kangaroos, wallabies, and goats often dart across the road. Avoid driving at dusk and dawn when kangaroos are most active. If you find yourself within inches of a ’roo, go against your gut and avoid swerving out of the way. Swerving on unsealed roads can easily send the car into full roll. In case this dreadful scenario proves true, purchasing windshield insurance before you hit the road is an excellent idea.
