To experience Moonta’s mining history, don a hard hat and camp lamp and head 55m underground with the Wheal Hughes Copper Mine tour. (Bookings essential, made through Moonta Station Tourist Office. Tours W and Sa-Su 10, 11:30am, 1, and 2:30pm.) For more mining history, check out the Moonta Mines Museum. (Verran Terr. ☎08 8825 1891. Open daily 1-4pm.) Departing from the museum, the Tourist Railway takes you through tunnels, past the reservoir and ore-sorting floors, and stops for a visit at the Precipitation Works for an explanation on copper recovery. (50min. Runs W 2pm, Sa-Su 1, 2, and 3pm.) Beautiful Moonta Bay and Wallaroo’s North Beach offer the best beaches in the area and calm, seaweed-free water. Both coasts of the peninsula running down to Innes National Park have a number of secluded beaches with excellent fishing and diving. Many are only accessible with 4WD. Captain Cook Charters runs fishing trips from the Wallaroo Marina, and outfits you with full fishing gear, tackle, bait, and soft drinks. Bring your own lunch. (☎04 2962 1557. Full-day charter, 7am-3:30pm, $150 per person. Min. 4 people.) Sea SA Ferries crosses the Spencer Gulf from Wallaroo to Eyre Peninsula’s Lucky Bay six times daily. (☎08 8823 0777; www.seasa.com.au. Bookings essential. $32.50, children $15, vehicles $110.) Lovers of Cornish culture and baked goods rush to Moonta every May for Kernewek Lowender (www.kernewek.org), the largest Cornish festival in Australia. Few know what the festival title means, but that doesn’t stop the crowds from enjoying its week-long lineup of activities.
