Most tourist attractions are condensed into the downtown area west of the Sullivan’s Cove wharf, which is contained by Davey and Bathurst St. Elizabeth St., which intersects downtown, proceeds uphill to budget-friendly North Hobart. South of the cove, Battery Point is one of the oldest sections of the city and is packed with antique shops and cottages. The northern border of Battery Point is defined by Salamanca Place, a row of renovated Georgian warehouses that now houses trendy shops and restaurants. Nearby Franklin Wharf is the departure point for numerous harbor cruises. Hobart is set amid the Wellington Range with the imposing Mount Wellington on the western skyline and the smaller Mount Nelson to the south, both of which offer fine views of the region. The city proper can be easily negotiated on foot, while public buses run to the outer suburbs. Several well-maintained roads lead into the city center, including Highway 1, connecting Burnie, Devonport, Launceston, and Hobart.
Beyond the Queen’s Domain north of downtown, the Tasman Bridge spans the Derwent River. There, the Tasman Hwy. (A3) heads east and connects to the A9 and the Tasman Peninsula. Brooker Ave. leads north up the Derwent Valley, becoming Hwy. 1 and connecting to the A10 to the west. Davey St. becomes the A6 as it heads southward to the Huon Valley and Bruny Island.
