Transit Centre Backpackers, 199 Collins St. (☎03 6231 2400), above the bus terminal. Spacious common area done all in purple. Friendly proprietors live on-site. Tiny rooms crammed with bunk beds. TV, kitchen, laundry, pool table. Free storage. Internet $4 per hr. Reception M-F 8am-9pm, Sa-Su 8am-1pm and 4-9pm. 10-bed dorms $21, 8-bed $22, 6-bed $23; twins $26; doubles $60.
Treasure Island Caravan Park, 1 Alcorso Dr., Berriedale (☎03 6249 2379), 12km north of the city center on Hwy. 1. Challenging to reach by public transport; take the X1 bus, but check in with the tourist office first, as service is often patchy. Situated on the Derwent River. Facilities include showers, laundry, and kitchen. Reception 8am-10pm. Sites $13-21, powered $18-24; on-site caravans $48; cabins $72-80.
