  • State Cinema, 375 Elizabeth St. (☎03 6234 6318; www.statecinema.com.au), in North Hobart. Tasmania’s oldest running and only independent movie theater. Indie films screened in glamorous facilities. $15, concessions $13, seniors $11.
  • Peacock Theatre, 77 Salamanca Pl. (☎03 6234 8414; www.salarts.com), in the Salamanca Arts Centre. Experimental theater with a lovely interior. $15-30.
  • Theatre Royal, 29 Campbell St. (☎03 6233 2299). The oldest theater in Australia. Stages plays, musicals, song and dance shows, comedy festivals, and a variety of other crowd-pleasers. Box office open M-F 9am-5pm, Sa 9am-1pm. $25-50.
  • Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, 1 Davey St. (☎1800 001 190), in the Federation Concert Hall at the Grand Chancellor. Over 50 years old and holds performances every few weeks. Box office open M-F 9am-5pm, Sa concert days from 5pm, and all concert nights from 6pm. $35-49, concessions $20.
