Getting around Victoria is a breeze, thanks to the thorough, efficient intrastate train and bus system run by V/Line. For more extensive national service, Greyhound Australia, Country Link, and Great Southern buses depart from Southern Cross Station (for more information, see Intercity Transportation). Renting a car allows for more freedom, and Victoria’s highway system is the country’s most extensive and navigable. To cut down on rental costs, check hostel ride-share boards. The Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV), 438 Lt. Collins St., Melbourne (☎03 9944 8808 or 13 19 55; roadside assistance ☎13 11 11; www.racv.com.au), has great maps and sells short-term traveler’s insurance. Members of other automobile clubs may already have reciprocal membership. The RACV Roadside Care package (including 8 free service calls annually and 20km of free towing in the metropolitan area) costs $73, plus a $42 joiner’s fee. For more information see Costs and Insurance.
