Normandy (Normandie) Overview

Normandy’s history has always been tied to the sea; as early as AD 911, the Viking raider Rollo sailed in from Norway and established himself as the first duke of Normandy. His descendant William the Bastard confirmed Normandy’s naval power when he conquered England in 1066, earning himself a more flattering nickname: William the Conqueror. The English, eager to conquer the closest chunk of France, repeatedly sent their powerful fleets to Normandy during the Hundred Years’ War, and in 1431 they captured and burned Joan of Arc in Rouen. By 1450, however, Normandy was safely back in French hands. The English didn’t attempt another invasion until June 6, 1944 (better known as D-Day), when they returned—this time in the name of France—with North American allies to liberate Normandy from German control.

Today, Normandy maintains its maritime character and the traces of its tumultuous past with quaint harbors, fresh seafood, and medieval monuments scarred by centuries of warfare. The region is saturated with natural beauty, from breathtaking coastal rock formations and stunning seascapes to rolling countryside dotted with cows. In the larger cities, the atmosphere is livelier; the designer boutiques of Rouen buzz by day, and the clubs of Caen are hopping by night. Take time from the sights to sample Norman culinary specialties—Camembert cheese, fresh seafood, Benedictine liqueur, and all things apple.

  • Peer over the breathtaking chalk cliffs of Étretat .
