Vienna Local Transportation

  • Public Transportation: Wiener Linien (☎790 91 00; www.wienerlinien.at). The U-Bahn (subway), Straßenbahn (tram), S-Bahn (elevated tram), and bus lines operate on a 1-ticket system, so you can transfer between types of transportation without having to buy a new ticket. Purchase tickets at a counter, machine, on board, or at a tobacco shop (trafik) . A single fare (€1.70 in advance, €2.20 on board) lets you travel to any destination in the city and switch from bus to U-Bahn to tram to S-Bahn in any order, provided your travel is uninterrupted. Other ticket options include a 1-day pass (€5.70), 3-day rover ticket (€13.60), 7-day pass (€14; valid M 9am to the next M 9am), and an 8-day pass (€28; valid any 8 days, not necessarily consecutive; can be split between several people, but must be validated for each person). The Vorteilscard (Vienna Card; €18.50) allows for 72hr. of travel and discounts at museums and sights and can be purchased at the ticket office and hotels. To avoid a €60 fine from plainclothes inspectors, validate your ticket by punching it in the machine. Tickets need only be stamped once. Regular trams and subway cars do not run midnight-5am. Night buses run 2 per hr., 12:30-4:30am, along most routes; “N” signs designate night bus stops. A night bus schedule and discount passes are available from Wiener Linien information offices (open M-F 6:30am-6:30pm, Sa-Su 8:30am-4pm) in the Karlspl., Stephahnspl., Westbahnhof, and some other U-Bahn stations, and at the tourist office .
