Along The Ring. The Stadtpark (City Park) was the first municipal park outside the former city walls. The oft-photographed Johann Strauss monument is in the center of the park. (U4: Stadtpark.) Clockwise up the Ring, the gorgeous greenhouses of Burggarten (Palace Garden) were reserved for the imperial family until 1918. The Schmetterlinghaus, or Butterfly House, is found here. (☎01 533 85 70. Open Apr.-Oct. M-F 10am-4:45pm, Sa-Su 10am-6:15pm; Nov.-Mar. M-Sa 10am-3:45pm.) The romantic Volksgarten (People’s Garden) is best viewed at sunset.
Augarten. Northeast of downtown is Augarten, Vienna’s oldest public park. In 1775, Kaiser Josef II gave the former formal French garden a Baroque face-lift and opened it to the public. The WWII anti-aircraft towers now dominating the park’s center detract from its previous beauty. (Tram #31 from Schottenring or tram N to Obere Augartenstr. and head left down Taborstr. Open sunrise to sunset.)
