Many of classical music’s greats lived, composed, and performed in Vienna. Beethoven, Haydn, and Mozart wrote their best-known masterpieces here; a century later, Berg, Schönberg, and Webern refreshed the music scene. Today, Vienna hosts many budget performances, though prices rise in the summer. The Bundestheaterkasse, I, Hanuschg. 3, sells tickets for the Staatsoper, the Volksoper, and the Burgtheater. Staatsoper, I, Opernring 2 (☎01 514 44 22 50; www.wiener-staatsoper.at). Vienna’s premier opera performs nearly every night Sept.-June. No shorts. Seats €3.50-254. 500 standing-room tickets go on sale 80min. before every show (1 per person; €2-3.50); arrive 2hr. before curtain. Box office in the foyer open M-F 9am until 1hr. before curtain, Sa 9am-noon; 1st Sa of each month and during Advent 9am-5pm. MC/V.
Wiener Philharmoniker Orchestra (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra; ☎01 505 65 25; www.wienerphilharmoniker.at) plays in the Musikverein, Austria’s premier concert hall. To purchase tickets, visit the box office, Bösendorferstr. 12, well in advance of performances. Tickets also available at Lothinringerstrasse 20. MC/V.
Wiener Sängerknaben (Vienna Boys’ Choir; ☎01 533 99 27) sings during mass every Su at 9:15am (mid-Sept. to late June) in the Hofburgkapelle. (U3: Herreng.) Despite rumors to the contrary, standing room is free; arrive before 8am. Tickets €37; available online at www.viennaticket.com. MC/V.
