Vienna hosts several important (mostly musical) festivals. The Wiener Festwochen (May 8-June 14, 2009) has a diverse program of concerts, exhibitions, and plays. (☎01 58 92 20; www.festwochen.or.at.) In May, over 4000 people attend Lifeball, Europe’s largest AIDS charity event and Vienna’s biggest gay celebration. With the Lifeball Style Police threatening to dispose of under-dressed guests (make-up and hair-styling are musts), come looking like you deserve to mix and mingle with Bill Clinton, Elton John, and other celebrities. (☎01 595 56 77; www.lifeball.org. €75-150). Democrats host the late-June Danube Island Festival, which celebrates with fireworks and concerts (☎01 535 35 35; www.donauinselfest.at; free). The Staatsoper and Volkstheater host the Jazzfest Wien (☎01 503 56 47; www.viennajazz.org) during the first weeks of July. Also in July, the annual Film Festival (www.wien-event.at), in Rathauspl., features nightly exhibitions of music films. From mid-July to mid-August, the ImPulsTanz Festival (☎01 523 55 58; www.impulstanz.com) attracts some of the world’s greatest dance troupes and offers seminars to enthusiasts. The city-wide film festival, Viennale (www.viennale.at), kicks off in mid-October.
