London Environmentalism
As an urban center, London does not have as many sprawling fields teeming with wildlife as, for instance, the UK Lakes District
does. However, the city is full of environmentally conscious people who actively work to preserve greenery in the UK and the
rest of the world.
- British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), c/o 80 York Way, King’s Cross, London N1 9AG (☎7278 4294; www.btcv.org). The largest practical conservation organization in Britain, helping over 130,000 volunteers take hands-on
action. Sponsors community and school programs, training for employment, and regular sessions of conservation activities through
Green Gym.
- Friends of the Earth, 26-28 Underwood St., London N1 7JQ (☎7490 1555; www.foe.co.uk). Circulates news events and networks with local groups. Also works on the world’s water problem and on creative
ideas for sustainable development.
- Greenpeace UK, Canonbury Villas, London N1 2PN (☎7865 8100; www.greenpeace.org.uk). Active in a wide range of regional campaigns against forest logging, toxic chemicals and nuclear
waste, and the war in Iraq. Also advocates for renewable energy. Contact the London central office for calendar and volunteer
openings.
- Sustain, 94 White Lion St., London N1 9PF (☎7837 1228; www.sustainweb.org). Launched in 1999 as a merger of the National Food Alliance and the Sustainable Agriculture Food and
Environment (SAFE) Alliance, Sustain relies on volunteers to maintain a network of over 100 organizations committed to safe
food production.
