Bremen (pop. 550,000)—the surly, leather-jacketed rebel of the Hanseatic League—was expelled from the trading conglomerate after citizens made a bonfire of Hanseatic documents. Despite its rebellious flair, the city has done an exceptional job of preserving the relics of its past, including its medieval architecture, fortunately spared from much WWII damage. The historic Rathaus and Dom dominate the city’s public image, and the Schnoorviertel, with its winding alleyways and tiny brick homes, provides a fascinating (if touristy) glimpse into its medieval heart. At its fringes, a sizable student population keeps the atmosphere lively. Though relatively small, Bremen’s renowned cultural institutions and busy bar scene rival those of cities several times its size.
