OTHER England DESTINATIONS

London Clerkenwell

There’s no shortage of deliciously diverse dining experiences in Clerkenwell, from pitch-black fine dining to cafes focused first and foremost on local and organic fare. Sandwich bars and quick cafes cluster around Farringdon station and along St. John Street for the business lunch hour, while near West Smithfield you’ll find inexpensive snack bars, pubs, and Chinese takeaways. For a proper sit-down meal, your best bet is either Charterhouse Street or Exmouth Market, a pedestrian street north of Clerkenwell Rd. with both eateries and adorable shops. Tucked between fine dining options, Clerkenwell’s pubs are some of London’s oldest, and they afford great options for those in the mood for something less formal than the area’s posh restaurants.

  • Dans Le Noir, 30-31 Clerkenwell Green (☎020 7253 1100; www.danslenoir.com), Aimed at providing the ultimate sensory experience (and raising awareness about the visually impaired), the name says it all: dine in pitch black darkness while being served by blind waiters. All you know is that your 2- or 3-course menu is either meat, fish, veggie, or a “complete surprise,” so you have only your taste buds to trust. For those who are afraid of the dark, the downstairs bar is lit, but your drink comes with a secret treat. Reserve 1 week in advance for a weekday, 2 weeks in advance for the weekend. 2-course meal £32, 3-course meal £38. Open M-Sa 6:30pm-midnight; 1st sitting 6:45-7:15pm, 2nd sitting 9-9:30pm
