SAINT PANCRAS OLD CHURCH. The first church on this site was reputedly founded by Roman legionaries in AD 314 for early Christian worship and became the first parish in London. The present building, though, dates from the 13th century—some of the Norman masonry is visible on the north wall of the nave. Don’t miss the sixth-century altar stone, rumored to have belonged to St. Augustine of Canterbury. In the large and lovely churchyard is Sir John Soanes’s mausoleum and the Hardy Tree, designed by a young Thomas Hardy long before he became a writer.
